Description

Ceanothus ‘Concha’, also known as the Californian Lilac, are lush evergreen ornamental trees which display simple leaves accompanied by little blue, purple and white flowers in terminal clusters. The trees have a dense and bushy habit, so are ideal to position in small gardens, patios, borders or mixed containers.

Planting and Care

Plant Ceanothus trees during either the Spring or Autumn seasons with moist, well-drained soil – preferable loam, clay or sand-based soils. The tree will have the best opportunity to thrive and develop in sunny but sheltered areas. Peak flourishing time for the ‘Concha’ is through May – July and the flowers will be sweetly fragrant, attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinating wildlife to your garden.

Maintenance

The ‘Concha’ Trees are very easy and low maintenance plants to care for due to their hardy and compact structure. To achieve the most colourful foliage, prune back the branch tips annually by around 15cm towards the later stage of flourishing season to encourage fresh, variegated growth for the following season. During the colder times of the year, Ceanothus trees are known to be very frost hardy – so minimal protection is needed.

Conclusion

Well-known for their abundant clusters of deep blue flowers, the Ceanothus Concha tree is valued all year round for their stunning display of vibrant coloured leave and foliage. Emerging in early Spring with maturing shades of green, before hitting prime flourishing season where the lush blue/purple leaves appear and add so much character to the tree. Due to being evergreen, the tree will keep their natural green leaves all year round.
